Owner required a holistic, campus level design initiative to provide a state-of-the-art athletic and life skills training facility balanced with a phased implementation and a budget constrained by fundraising limitations. Extensive Pre-Design charettes and computer-generated 3D animated studies helped define the stakeholders' vision and established a feasible project budget and scope. Of particular importance was the site adaptation of a former quarry. Sun and shade modeling helped determine proper siting of the building and athletic fields. The resultant 34,000 square foot building motivates and
inspires the staff and athletes with a grand lobby and "Hall of Heros," multi-functional meeting spaces, gym, fitness and powerlifting areas, and a medical clinic. Included are restroom / changing room areas that double as storm shelters and support areas for equipment, supplies, materials and technology for the organization's 14,000+ athletes and 1,400 volunteers. The quarry's 100 foot rock walls provide security and enclosure for the athletic fields with an added bonus of shading for afternoon events.
